B201 | Hands-On: Build and Deploy AI Models with IBM Db2
Sunday October 27, 2024 09:00 - 13:00 CET
IBM Db2 offers a wide range of AI features, both built-in and external tools, for creating AI systems and solutions. These include over 200 built-in AI stored procedures and tools that work seamlessly with open-source AI ecosystems. In this workshop, participants will explore Db2’s AI support and use a selection of these features to implement practical AI models. The workshop consists of two parts. In the first module, participants will learn how to develop a supervised AI model using Db2’s built-in AI stored procedures. The entire model development and usage will be done using SQL within the database. In the second module, participants will learn how to create a Python model using popular Python packages outside of the database, and then deploy that model back into a Db2 database. By the end of the workshop, participants will have gained fundamental skills and hands-on experience in utilizing these AI capabilities. They will be able to apply these skills to their future AI projects. This workshop is designed to be beginner-friendly and does not require participants to have extensive knowledge in AI. Basic SQL skills and some Python programming skills are sufficient for attending and benefiting from this workshop.

C2 | Explain Essentials for Query Optimization
Monday October 28, 2024 11:30 - 12:30 CET
One of the most important factors in query performance is the access plan chosen by the Db2 query optimizer. Understanding the query access plan is essential to understanding query performance and the explain facility is the way to get the access plan. But SQL statements can be issued in different ways (dynamic, static, procedures, application programs) and access plans can exist in a variety of contexts (system catalogs, dynamic statement cache, monitoring tables), so getting the correct access plan for the correct statement can sometimes be a challenge. This presentation will cover the most important techniques for collecting and using explain information so that you can quickly and effectively understand your access plans to achieve and maintain the best possible query performance.

D2 | Do you just reorg or do you Rock 'n Reorg
Monday October 28, 2024 11:30 - 12:30 CET
I have noticed that everybody knows the word Reorg, but not so many know what for it really is. And if we talk about the member cluster, I would bet that a huge number of tables has as cluster index, just the unique, primary key or just the first it was created.
I mean, if I sell books, why do I have my Cluster-Index by ISBN instead of having it by author for example. As it's most probably that people ask for books from an author or books by title. So let's try to related this, me going to a shelve an bringing to my desk all the books from an author or all the editions for the same Title instead of all the ISBN numbers from 1020202020 to 1020202040, with the pre-fetch and the bufferpools.
And explain about how you could query your db2 catalogue to be sure that everything it's been reorged, because some shops have tools to schedule the house keeping, but if some of the include ... or exclude .. they work with are not correctly set, it can be the case that some reorgs are not running or are running empty JCL's. I have had this problems.
If you are not very good with SQL or you just prefer it, you can play with the IBM DSNACCOX Store Procedure, and it will recommend you what to do, and not only for Reorg.
Also would like to talk about the other possibilities that it offers, as deleting data with the REORG ... DISCARDS ..., delete empty partitions with DROP_PART, REBALANCE, ... also that it's need to materialize pending changes or to encrypt/decrypt data.
And last but not least, the index reorg, this is a thing I have recently "discovered", because the house keeping that I had at my previous position, was always running at tablespace level, and sometimes just with reorging one or x indexes it's enough.

E7 | DB2 LUW PureScale – Custom Disaster Recovery configuration
Tuesday October 29, 2024 11:30 - 12:30 CET
IBM provides us number of solution to achieve multisite HA/DR for PureScale clusters. Those include technologies like HADR Replication for PureScale Clusters, Geographically Dispersed PureScale Clusters, GPFS replication for PureScale Clusters, Q Replication for PureScale Clusters.
In the presentation we will describe alternative approach, where replication across 2 sites is provided by Storage Array Layer, which allows us to achieve additional benefits like consistency groups going beyond single GPFS filesystem used by the PureScale, optimized network utilization where Storage Array replication happens on SAN Fiber, additional HA layer where filesystem can be cross mounted across sites which gives additional redundancy layer for storage availability.

We implement solution by deploying Synchronic Storage Replication across 2 sites, where SAN fabric provides us NSD multi path connections from each side. This way on each side we have collection of NSD disks that are local to given side, and also connection to remote NSD disks from DR side. On both sites we install standalone PureScale clusters, independent from each, therefore failure of any of those clusters does not impact other side counterpart. Having 2 clusters we designate one as primary by creating PureScale managed GPFS on top of Storage Array Layer, and on top of that create Database with its' associated paths. Next we use gpfssync capabilities to export primary GPFS filesystem , and next mount the same on DR site. This allows us to mimic primary cluster on DR site, and next attach those synchronized mount points to TSAMP cluster on secondary site. Later on, we just move application connection to DR site, which can handle further ongoing workloads.

Proposed solution is active-passive deployment, when at any given time only one cluster has connection to synchronized storage array. We achieve this by protections on each layer (NSD disks active on one site only, GPFS mounts online on one site only, database cataloging on one site only). This is crucial to ensure only one side has active writes to the cluster, so that we prevent any corruption of the data. In the presentation we provide procedures to setup such deployment, along with failover procedures where we move storage attachment from primary to secondary, and reverse. We also provide testing results where we verify solution, by forcing failover and more failure scenarios while processing application workload.

E9 | Unlocking Db2 for z/OS Data Using Data Gate on Z
Tuesday October 29, 2024 16:30 - 17:30 CET
In 2021, we initiated a PoC for Db2 for z/OS Data Gate with primary focus on functional and non-functional performance requirements, running on an x86 platform, which was successfully completed with good results. As we started to drill further into other non-functional requirements focusing on HA/DR we came to the conclusion that Data Gate on Z could be a better fit for what we wanted to achieve, which triggered our 2022 PoC, covering Data Gate on Z. This presentation will cover the whole journey of having done PoCs for both x86 and the Z platform, but with emphasis on what additional benefits the Z variant brings to the table. This session will be about positioning Db2 Data Gate on Z as the most efficient/effective way of supporting the fundamental need for unlocking Db2 for z/OS data to support UBS requirements related to a newly defined Digital Core Architecture, app modernization, and MIPS offload use cases.

Wednesday October 30, 2024 10:20 - 11:20 CET
We need to move our production database to a new “machine”, or upgrade it to a new version of Db2.   But, we cannot take an outage (longer than a very few minutes).  How can we do that?  What tools are available?   This presentation is a follow-up to last year’s “AIX to RHEL conversion” presentation.  In that case, we were moving small dev environments from AIX to RHEL.  Now it’s SHOW TIME!   It’s time to do Production environments.   What are the strengths and weaknesses of each available tool?   What should we use and what challenges will we encounter?

Wednesday October 30, 2024 10:20 - 11:20 CET
Dive into the fundamentals of Db2 performance tuning and see firsthand how tuning not only addresses bottlenecks but can optimize application performance. In this beginner-friendly session, we’ll introduce the basics of Db2 performance tuning and then walk together through various advanced, yet easily understandable, optimization techniques. We’ll also explore the essentials of Db2's index navigation, the value of getpages and I/Os, and the importance that statistics, filters, and predicates have on determining the optimal access path for efficient queries. Leave with a firm grasp on the ways to identify and resolve performance issues, leading to faster query responses and more efficient resource utilization. Even better, leave as a Db2 performance expert, with practical ways to enhance the speed, reliability, and user experience of your applications.
The objectives cover a wide spectrum, starting with understanding how Db2 navigates an index and tablespace, and the performance attributes associated with various access paths. Readers will explore the impact of clustered and unclustered indexes on performance and comprehend the significance of getpages (logical reads) and I/Os (physical reads) in influencing system efficiency.
Moreover, this session elucidates the role of statistics, filter factors, and predicates in determining the optimal access path for queries, providing valuable insights into the decision-making process. Furthermore, it introduces potential solutions to common performance issues, equipping beginners with the foundational knowledge and problem-solving skills essential for embarking on the journey of Db2 performance optimization.

Wednesday October 30, 2024 14:00 - 15:00 CET
Analyzing Db2 for z/OS performance problems can be overwelming. There is a lot of information available in Db2 , z/OS, ... so it is important that you know where to look and what to look at.
This session will discuss a number of real customer problems, what info to collect, and how to analyze and interpret the data to find the heart of the problem.
While the focus will be on Db2, but as Db2 performance is closely related to how the overall z/OS system is doing, the session will also explore a number of z/OS key metrics to see whether the issue you experience in Db2 might be part of a larger system problem or not.

C13 | Db2 audit made easy
Wednesday October 30, 2024 16:30 - 17:30 CET
Let Db2 take care of the audit data automatically, w/o having to run external Jobs in order to archive and extract the audit logs. This is a presentation about the handling of audit data in a customer project at REWE digital in Germany. Since Db2 10.5 FP4 (Cancun), it's possible for the extract of audit logs, to write that data to SYSLOG on Unix (AIX & Linux) systems.
Customer wants to get rid of scheduled external jobs, which have to run in intervalls against every db2 instance (more than 150) in their environment in order to archive and extract the audit data for instances and databases.
The session will give insight into the realisation of the project using Db2's internal administrative task scheduler and procedures in oder to extract the audit data directly to SYSLOG files and let QRADAR take the data directly from that single source per system for further processing.
Monitoring of the audit processing will be another main aspekt of this session.

Thursday October 31, 2024 09:00 - 10:00 CET
DB2 pureScale v12.1 is the ideal platform for demanding OLTP applications, with Outstanding Availability, Excellent Performance and Scalability.
The most-common SQL for DB2 OLTP applications run unmodifed on Db2 pureScale when migrating from existing Db2 non-clustered configurations. Most changes for optimizations deal with database design, such as indexes and data partitioning, to maximize performance and scalability. This presentation focuses on not just functioning on Db2 pureScale but finding opportunities to run optimally and reap the benefits of scale-up and scale-out performance:

spotting challenges early in planning / porting applications to Db2 pureScale
using database monitoring insights to find and address bottlenecks

C16 | Power-Up for Ansible: Use Db2 as Configuration Database
Thursday October 31, 2024 10:20 - 11:20 CET
I already showed howto work on Db2-Databases with Ansible and Python in previous IDUG sessions. This time around I'm going to guide you through the process on how to use Db2 as a configuration repository for Ansible. Runtime configuration for Ansible playbooks is usually done by the ansible inventory (usually requires a pull request) and, for runtime configuration, "extra-vars". This can be cumbersome in large environments and does not bear much flexibility. The result is usually an increase of AWX/Ansible-Tower templates for different configurations and targets. Furthermore, the templates (and surveys) get increasingly complex and uncomfortable to handle. Keeping runtime configuration data in a centralized database gives ample oportunity to create and maintain arbitrarily complex runtime configurations in one or multiple Databases with SQL so that the user does not need to know anything about Ansible at all, minimizing operational overhead.I will show how to implement this with the help of a few lines of python code. Live-elements will be pre-recorded if needed. Code will be available on GitHub.
