We hear a lot about the open mainframe, but what does it really mean?  Depending on your role and organization boundary, the definition of open mainframe can vary.  At Broadcom, our point of view on the open mainframe is essentially to enable those capabilities our customers need to effectively manage this critical component of their hybrid IT architecture, as services.  This is supported through our Database Management Data Service (DBM-DS) architecture built to be Zowe compliant, leveraging the many benefits provided by the Zowe API mediation layer (API-ML).  Come join our workshop to learn best practices for standing up a DBM-DS instance and API-ML which will then open the doors to many exciting use cases enabled through a web-based interactive user interface.

C2 | Explain Essentials for Query Optimization
Monday October 28, 2024 11:30 - 12:30 CET
One of the most important factors in query performance is the access plan chosen by the Db2 query optimizer. Understanding the query access plan is essential to understanding query performance and the explain facility is the way to get the access plan. But SQL statements can be issued in different ways (dynamic, static, procedures, application programs) and access plans can exist in a variety of contexts (system catalogs, dynamic statement cache, monitoring tables), so getting the correct access plan for the correct statement can sometimes be a challenge. This presentation will cover the most important techniques for collecting and using explain information so that you can quickly and effectively understand your access plans to achieve and maintain the best possible query performance.

F2 | From the Statement Cache with Love
Monday October 28, 2024 11:30 - 12:30 CET
In today's modern applications, workload is increasingly shifting from traditional CICS or IMS transactions to Java workload. As a result, analyzing dynamic queries has become more important than ever before.
In this presentation, I will demonstrate how to systematically analyze dynamic queries using the Global Dynamic Statement Cache, and how to identify queries that require immediate attention. We will develop a tool that allows SQL developers to analyze dynamic queries in their shop from day one after the conference. This tool is designed to be easily accessible and user-friendly, without requiring access to the mainframe. With it, developers can answer typical questions such as "Which queries performed better or worse within the last 30 days?", "Which of my queries were running at a given time and how did they perform?", and "Which of my queries are getting slower over time?" in a self-service mode. Additionally, we will explore how to translate query tuning results to cash savings, demonstrating the financial benefits of query optimization. By the end of this presentation, you will have a clear understanding of how to uncover and monetize hidden insights by analyzing the Global Dynamic Statement Cache.

C3 | Evolution of Database Infrastructure: Performance & Monitoring aspects when Migrating a Legacy COBOL Application in Banking from Db2 z/OS to Db2 LUW
Monday October 28, 2024 14:00 - 15:00 CET
This presentation deals with the complicated migration of a decades-old COBOL application from an IBM mainframe with focus on migration journey from Db2 for z/OS to a distributed environment with Db2 LUW on Power Linux. With almost 12 million customers, the Polish banking institution faced the challenge of adapting to a new DBMS while transitioning to the distributed infrastructure. The focus lies on database layer monitoring, encompassing high-level performance monitoring and hardware capacity planning for the distributed architecture. Extensive testing and benchmarking, crucial for mitigating the inherent risks of migrating a 30TB+ database, are highlighted. Through this migration story, participants gain insights into complex, multi-level database monitoring and benchmarking, comparing DB2 Z/OS with DB2 LUW to assess needs for the new distributed environment. The second part shifts focus to theoretical aspects of complex DB2 monitoring, exploring the architecture behind state-of-the-art monitoring systems and strategies for implementation at scale to derive valuable insights. This presentation offers a blend of practical experiences and theoretical concepts, providing attendees with actionable knowledge for navigating similar database migration and monitoring challenges.

Catalog statistics are what fuel the Db2 optimizer, and its tank is always full because of automatic statistics collection. However there are some extra buttons on the dashboard that you can use to enable even better statistics to really boost your query performance. Statistical views are an advanced form of statistics that allow the optimizer to see relationships across joins and to see the data distributions for expressions and even groups of expressions. Statistical views can be combined with column groups and distribution statistics to provide a high-octane boost to your queries with the added benefit of more stable and reliable query performance. Attend this presentation to learn how to use these more advanced forms of statistics to get top performance out of your Db2 system.

As DevOps is adapted by the mainframe community the developers show an increasing interest in the Ops side, i.e., being able to monitor and view the health of an application. While showing data in 3270 is not bad there are many advantages of using modern tooling to visualize data.
In the first half of the presentation, we will give a high level introduction to modern open source visualization tools like Kibana and Grafana.
In the second half of the presentation we will explore several use cases of interest to Db2 for z/OS DBAs and application owners and developers, such as viewing Db2 real time statistics, Db2 utility history and Db2 performance metrics.
