Monday October 28, 2024 11:30 - 12:30 CET
Wouldn't it be great if Db2 could automatically determine ideal access plans based on hidden correlations discovered in your table data? That's the idea behind Db2's AI Query Optimizer, a key new feature in Db2 v12 for LUW. This talk will go through the basics of how the Db2 AI Query Optimizer automatically trains machine learning models that discover hidden data correlations. These machine learning models are later used at SQL query compilation time to generate better runtime access plans, making your queries run faster. All of this is done automatically, under the covers.

C2 | Explain Essentials for Query Optimization
Monday October 28, 2024 11:30 - 12:30 CET
One of the most important factors in query performance is the access plan chosen by the Db2 query optimizer. Understanding the query access plan is essential to understanding query performance and the explain facility is the way to get the access plan. But SQL statements can be issued in different ways (dynamic, static, procedures, application programs) and access plans can exist in a variety of contexts (system catalogs, dynamic statement cache, monitoring tables), so getting the correct access plan for the correct statement can sometimes be a challenge. This presentation will cover the most important techniques for collecting and using explain information so that you can quickly and effectively understand your access plans to achieve and maintain the best possible query performance.

D2 | Do you just reorg or do you Rock 'n Reorg
Monday October 28, 2024 11:30 - 12:30 CET
I have noticed that everybody knows the word Reorg, but not so many know what for it really is. And if we talk about the member cluster, I would bet that a huge number of tables has as cluster index, just the unique, primary key or just the first it was created.
I mean, if I sell books, why do I have my Cluster-Index by ISBN instead of having it by author for example. As it's most probably that people ask for books from an author or books by title. So let's try to related this, me going to a shelve an bringing to my desk all the books from an author or all the editions for the same Title instead of all the ISBN numbers from 1020202020 to 1020202040, with the pre-fetch and the bufferpools.
And explain about how you could query your db2 catalogue to be sure that everything it's been reorged, because some shops have tools to schedule the house keeping, but if some of the include ... or exclude .. they work with are not correctly set, it can be the case that some reorgs are not running or are running empty JCL's. I have had this problems.
If you are not very good with SQL or you just prefer it, you can play with the IBM DSNACCOX Store Procedure, and it will recommend you what to do, and not only for Reorg.
Also would like to talk about the other possibilities that it offers, as deleting data with the REORG ... DISCARDS ..., delete empty partitions with DROP_PART, REBALANCE, ... also that it's need to materialize pending changes or to encrypt/decrypt data.
And last but not least, the index reorg, this is a thing I have recently "discovered", because the house keeping that I had at my previous position, was always running at tablespace level, and sometimes just with reorging one or x indexes it's enough.

F2 | From the Statement Cache with Love
Monday October 28, 2024 11:30 - 12:30 CET
In today's modern applications, workload is increasingly shifting from traditional CICS or IMS transactions to Java workload. As a result, analyzing dynamic queries has become more important than ever before.
In this presentation, I will demonstrate how to systematically analyze dynamic queries using the Global Dynamic Statement Cache, and how to identify queries that require immediate attention. We will develop a tool that allows SQL developers to analyze dynamic queries in their shop from day one after the conference. This tool is designed to be easily accessible and user-friendly, without requiring access to the mainframe. With it, developers can answer typical questions such as "Which queries performed better or worse within the last 30 days?", "Which of my queries were running at a given time and how did they perform?", and "Which of my queries are getting slower over time?" in a self-service mode. Additionally, we will explore how to translate query tuning results to cash savings, demonstrating the financial benefits of query optimization. By the end of this presentation, you will have a clear understanding of how to uncover and monetize hidden insights by analyzing the Global Dynamic Statement Cache.

D3 | My first year on the mainframe as a Db2 database administrator
Monday October 28, 2024 14:00 - 15:00 CET
By the time that the IDUG 2024 EMEA Db2 Tech Conference will take place, I (a 23 year old) will have been submersed in the world of the mainframe for about a year and a half. My journey, that’s still very much in its early stages, started in September 2022 when I chose “Mainframe expert” as my area of specialization during my studies applied computer science at University of Applied Sciences HOGENT (Ghent, Belgium). During those studies, me and my fellow mainframe students got introduced to the world of the mainframe and what would prove to be our future employers. I’ve started working in July 2023 as an engineer in the Db2 mainframe team at Belfius, a Belgian bank and insurer, where I did my internship. Proving once and for all that learning on the job is the best method for developing skills that are actually useful for both yourself and your employer.
The presentation will be structured into three sections. The first segment will delve into strategies for addressing a company's deficit in mainframe skills. This will primarily involve an exploration of the approach recommended by HOGENT and its partnering companies. It's important to note that the current situation in Belgium may not directly apply to other countries, especially those lacking a university offering a mainframe program. Nevertheless, I firmly believe that accepting interns from other IT fields can yield comparable results. Furthermore, I intend to present the outcomes of the mainframe internship at Belfius and share the company's perspective on the experience. This will also include a candid discussion of the challenges encountered during the internship and our proposed solutions for future interns. Lastly, I will discuss the skills I developed during my inaugural year at Belfius as a member of the Db2 mainframe team. Since I entered this role without prior database administration experience, I essentially began from scratch. This section will offer insights into my year long journey and the on the-job training I received

Monday October 28, 2024 14:00 - 15:00 CET
We’ll explore the journey from the inception of Partition by Growth (PBG) tablespaces, through converting to them from deprecated tablespace types and the exciting enhancements made in Db2 12 to fan out multi-table tablespaces to PBG. Db2 13 now provides a robust online mechanism to convert PBG tablespaces to Partition by Range (PBR) tablespaces which is useful for PBGs which have grown to an unmanageable dimension. We’ll have a sneak peek at the future enhancements which will make management of PBGs and PBRs more straightforward still.

Monday October 28, 2024 14:00 - 15:00 CET
JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) is an open standard data interchange format that has been around since the early 2000s but is gaining more traction all the time.
Data is available from a variety of sources and customers want to be able to consume and publish it without having to involve extra resources; software or staff.
As such, it behoves us in the database community to ensure that we can store, process  and display the data.
This presentation will demonstrate how to accomplish that requirement.

A4 | Taking SQL Functions To the Next Level
Monday October 28, 2024 15:20 - 16:20 CET
SQL Functions have long enabled customers to improve productivity and performance while also enabling cross platform porting, and encapsulating application logic in the database. Db2 for z/OS supports Built-in Functions that Aggregate data, operate on scalar data, as well as materialize data as a table. Db2 also enables customers to create functions in Host languages (such as COBOL or C/C++) or in SQL PL (The ANSI compatible SQL Procedures Language).
In the latest version of Db2, SQL Data Insights was introduced to allow easy, function based AI, to be applied directly to customer data.
This session will cover the basics and dig deeper into how to exploit all the Function(al) capabilities of Db2 to take your SQL queries to new levels.

E4 | The art of database design
Monday October 28, 2024 15:20 - 16:20 CET
Db2 OLTP and warehouse databases becomes larger and larger, and multi terra byte databases are common nowadays.
Therefore, is a good database design is essentially important – because it can influence the future of companies and government organizations, positively or negatively.
But what is a good database design and how do you develop it?
Designing a relational database is the process of creating a logical representation of either a complete database or objects like schemas, tables and so on.
The visual representation illustrates the database objects/entities, their attributes, data types etc. and describes the relationships between these entities, and the ways the data can be grouped and organized.
Database models address business needs and business rules. The design process can be very challenging because many aspects need to be considered. In addition, various stakeholders need to be involved.
In this session, I will talk about different design techniques and the most important aspects for a good database design.
Because this is essential for data quality, integrity, security, performance and scalability.

D6 | Diamonds are Forever - Real-World SQL Data Insight Experiences
Tuesday October 29, 2024 10:20 - 11:20 CET
Join me on a journey through our first year of deploying SQL Data Insights (SDI) into production. Discover how SDI impacted our business processes, changed stakeholder perceptions of the mainframe, and enhanced our approach to data analysis.
We will start with a review of our first use case and discuss the resources consumed for training and scoring, as well as the impact SDI had on our business processes.
SDI's most evident benefit is its ability to analyze data where it sits without having to export, transfer and reload it, and with minimal data science dependency. But how does it compare to more traditional approaches? To answer that, we'll compare SDI with other machine learning algorithms by applying them to a frequently used dataset for predicting diamond prices. We'll delve into the accuracy of the algorithms and see how SDI stacks up against data scientists' most loved algorithms.
Following that, we'll explore a brand-new use case that applies the new commonality-function in Db2 FL504. We'll discuss its usefulness, resource requirements, and potential impact on business processes, providing more practical insights into the power of SDI.
And finally, I'll share a use case that demonstrates how to identify outliers using SDI with Db2 monitoring data, ready to be applied in your own shop.
Don't miss this opportunity to gain practical insights into the power of SDI and how it can transform your data analysis!

E7 | DB2 LUW PureScale – Custom Disaster Recovery configuration
Tuesday October 29, 2024 11:30 - 12:30 CET
IBM provides us number of solution to achieve multisite HA/DR for PureScale clusters. Those include technologies like HADR Replication for PureScale Clusters, Geographically Dispersed PureScale Clusters, GPFS replication for PureScale Clusters, Q Replication for PureScale Clusters.
In the presentation we will describe alternative approach, where replication across 2 sites is provided by Storage Array Layer, which allows us to achieve additional benefits like consistency groups going beyond single GPFS filesystem used by the PureScale, optimized network utilization where Storage Array replication happens on SAN Fiber, additional HA layer where filesystem can be cross mounted across sites which gives additional redundancy layer for storage availability.

We implement solution by deploying Synchronic Storage Replication across 2 sites, where SAN fabric provides us NSD multi path connections from each side. This way on each side we have collection of NSD disks that are local to given side, and also connection to remote NSD disks from DR side. On both sites we install standalone PureScale clusters, independent from each, therefore failure of any of those clusters does not impact other side counterpart. Having 2 clusters we designate one as primary by creating PureScale managed GPFS on top of Storage Array Layer, and on top of that create Database with its' associated paths. Next we use gpfssync capabilities to export primary GPFS filesystem , and next mount the same on DR site. This allows us to mimic primary cluster on DR site, and next attach those synchronized mount points to TSAMP cluster on secondary site. Later on, we just move application connection to DR site, which can handle further ongoing workloads.

Proposed solution is active-passive deployment, when at any given time only one cluster has connection to synchronized storage array. We achieve this by protections on each layer (NSD disks active on one site only, GPFS mounts online on one site only, database cataloging on one site only). This is crucial to ensure only one side has active writes to the cluster, so that we prevent any corruption of the data. In the presentation we provide procedures to setup such deployment, along with failover procedures where we move storage attachment from primary to secondary, and reverse. We also provide testing results where we verify solution, by forcing failover and more failure scenarios while processing application workload.

In 2021, we initiated a PoC for Db2 for z/OS Data Gate with primary focus on functional and non-functional performance requirements, running on an x86 platform, which was successfully completed with good results. As we started to drill further into other non-functional requirements focusing on HA/DR we came to the conclusion that Data Gate on Z could be a better fit for what we wanted to achieve, which triggered our 2022 PoC, covering Data Gate on Z. This presentation will cover the whole journey of having done PoCs for both x86 and the Z platform, but with emphasis on what additional benefits the Z variant brings to the table. This session will be about positioning Db2 Data Gate on Z as the most efficient/effective way of supporting the fundamental need for unlocking Db2 for z/OS data to support UBS requirements related to a newly defined Digital Core Architecture, app modernization, and MIPS offload use cases.

Catalog statistics are what fuel the Db2 optimizer, and its tank is always full because of automatic statistics collection. However there are some extra buttons on the dashboard that you can use to enable even better statistics to really boost your query performance. Statistical views are an advanced form of statistics that allow the optimizer to see relationships across joins and to see the data distributions for expressions and even groups of expressions. Statistical views can be combined with column groups and distribution statistics to provide a high-octane boost to your queries with the added benefit of more stable and reliable query performance. Attend this presentation to learn how to use these more advanced forms of statistics to get top performance out of your Db2 system.

C13 | Db2 audit made easy
Wednesday October 30, 2024 16:30 - 17:30 CET
Let Db2 take care of the audit data automatically, w/o having to run external Jobs in order to archive and extract the audit logs. This is a presentation about the handling of audit data in a customer project at REWE digital in Germany. Since Db2 10.5 FP4 (Cancun), it's possible for the extract of audit logs, to write that data to SYSLOG on Unix (AIX & Linux) systems.
Customer wants to get rid of scheduled external jobs, which have to run in intervalls against every db2 instance (more than 150) in their environment in order to archive and extract the audit data for instances and databases.
The session will give insight into the realisation of the project using Db2's internal administrative task scheduler and procedures in oder to extract the audit data directly to SYSLOG files and let QRADAR take the data directly from that single source per system for further processing.
Monitoring of the audit processing will be another main aspekt of this session.

E14 | Introduction to dashboards for Db2 for z/OS DBAs
Wednesday October 30, 2024 17:40 - 18:40 CET
The ability to explore, analyze, and visualize data is becoming a hot topic. As DevOps is adapted by the mainframe community the developers show an increasing interest in the Ops side, i.e., being able to monitor and view the health of an application. While showing data in 3270 is not bad there are many advantages of using modern tooling to visualize data.
In the first half of the presentation, we will give a high level introduction to modern open source visualization tools like Kibana and Grafana.
In the second half of the presentation we will explore several use cases of interest to Db2 for z/OS DBAs and application owners and developers, such as viewing Db2 real time statistics, Db2 utility history and Db2 performance metrics. Ultimately this allows you to build dashboards tailored to individual applications.

C16 | Power-Up for Ansible: Use Db2 as Configuration Database
Thursday October 31, 2024 10:20 - 11:20 CET
I already showed howto work on Db2-Databases with Ansible and Python in previous IDUG sessions. This time around I'm going to guide you through the process on how to use Db2 as a configuration repository for Ansible. Runtime configuration for Ansible playbooks is usually done by the ansible inventory (usually requires a pull request) and, for runtime configuration, "extra-vars". This can be cumbersome in large environments and does not bear much flexibility. The result is usually an increase of AWX/Ansible-Tower templates for different configurations and targets. Furthermore, the templates (and surveys) get increasingly complex and uncomfortable to handle. Keeping runtime configuration data in a centralized database gives ample oportunity to create and maintain arbitrarily complex runtime configurations in one or multiple Databases with SQL so that the user does not need to know anything about Ansible at all, minimizing operational overhead.I will show how to implement this with the help of a few lines of python code. Live-elements will be pre-recorded if needed. Code will be available on GitHub.

Thursday October 31, 2024 14:30 - 18:30 CET
Bring your own device to this workshop, where you will have a chance to perform a hands-on lab to experience the latest deliverables towards Db2 user transformation.

Db2 administrator personas can execute some of their daily tasks in a more intuitive way via Db2 Administration Foundation and its integration with Db2 Tuning Services, Query Workload Tuner and IDAA Administration services.  Last but not least, administrators can also benefit from Db2 DevOps experience (DBaaS) to “shift-left” database operations to application developers under their rules and administrative directives.
Db2 application developer personas can develop / test and deploy application changes that also require database change in a speed that business demand. Using Db2 Developer Extension in IDE will simplify coding of SQL including native stored procedure code. Using Db2 DevOps Experience services (DBaaS), developers can, on demand, self-service database operations under the rules previously established by the Db2 administrators.
